// NEWS MARCH 2004

Scarlett was cast by Nickelodeon to star in their film 'The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie'. She won't appear on screen though, she is a voice actor. The film will be released on November 19 and is based on Nickelodeon's popular animated series 'SpongeBob Square Pants'. Other cast include Alec Baldwin and Jeffrey Tambor. The story centers on the irrepressible SpongeBob's efforts to retrieve King Neptune's stolen crown. Scarlett will play a new character named Mindy, daughter of the cantankerous undersea leader King Neptune.

'A Good Woman' was shown at screen tests. Read some comments here at Imdb.

A bit more about what 'The Pussycat Dolls' are: They're a Hollywood dance act and appearing with them has become something of a must. Recent guests include Charlize Theron, Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson, Christina Applegate and Brittany Murphy. And lately Scarlett. Madonna and Britney though have been pleading with the girls for months to allow them to join them on stage. Leading lady is Carmen Electra and she says 'We take off corsets and gloves. It has a striptease element but we don't really take our costumes off. The Pussycat Dolls are naughty but nice. We are very sexy but we don't strip naked, we just tease.' The group has male as well as female admirers, Drew Barrymore even persuaded them to appear in a scene for 'Charlie's Angels 2'.

The New York Times made a 26-page portfolio for their magazine dated February 29. It was about great performers and among them is Scarlett for her performance in 'Girl with a Pearl Earring'. See the photograph.

Last Friday, Scarlett made a special appearance: she performed with 'The Pussycat Dolls' in Johnny Depp's Viper Room in LA. See the pictures.

Apparently, the character Betsy in Scarlett's recently announced new project is based on the real Betsy Balcombe. There have been other films dealing with this piece of history, most recently Monsieur N.

There is a new Scarlett Johansson site: Simply Scarlett. I have been waiting for another site to come along (about other actresses there are up to 10 or more sites) and yet, it feels strange to have 'competition' :))

I have finished all the screen caps from Manny & Lo.

According to Variety, Scarlett will star in ’Napoleon and Betsy’. It is a pitch for a drama about the friendship between Napoleon Bonaparte and a young British girl. Johansson pitched the tale with Rebecca B. Kennedy, the scribe who is scripting the tale. They’re putting together a short list for Napoleon. The project tells the story of the emperor’s final years, as seen through the girl’s eyes. Initially defiant and planning to escape, Bonaparte tries to enlist her in his fantasy to regrasp power, but eventually becomes resigned to his fate.

Lion’s Gate has acquired the rights to the film, which will begin shooting in fall – after ’Synergy’ and ’The Black Dahlia’. Lion’s Gate is the same company attached to ’Girl with a Pearl Earring’. And overseeing the pic are Michael Burns and Mike Paseornek. Scarlett has made quite an impression on Michael Burns, Vice Chairman, who is quoted in the MovieMaker article that Scarlett is going to be a wonderful director someday. Interesting is the list of producers: Melanie Johansson, Alexandra Milchan and Gilles Arondeau. Clearly, Scarlett is now together with her mother realizing the ideas she’s had for some time, as she said in many recent interviews. I’m really looking forward to the film, the plot sounds interesting (I love historic fiction) and Scarlett will be a British girl and I just love British accents.

George Russell informed me that Yu Hasegawa-Johnson, a Japanese woman and visiting scholar at the Beckman Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, saw 'Lost in Translation' and felt it was 'very racist, insulting to Japanese people.' She applied for and received money to finance a documentary on reactions to the film. Her original idea was to show 'Lost in Translation' to a group of Japanese people, have them take notes during the film, lead them in a discussion afterward, and then interview each one individually. She subsequently decided to expand the range of participants to include anyone who has been to Japan. Also, she now says that, 'my purpose is not to make an 'anti-Lost in Translation' film, but a film that also shows alternative view points.'

I haven't yet posted anything about this matter on the site. But in fact, the question as to whether Lost in Translation is rascist arose right after it came out. George has already sent me an indepth commentary about it (he himself has been to Japan) and I plan to include that in my review of the film - when I'll finally get round to write it.

Anyway, if you're near or with easy access to the Urbana-Champaign area you could contact Ms. Hasegawa-Johnson about possible participation at yu@firstsunrise.net. Thank you George for this information.

In the UK April issue of InStyle Scarlett is featured on page 153. But the pictures and the article are the same that was in the US January issue. I will add that article soon.

Then, Julio has uploaded a video of Scarlett presenting an Oscar - and I have finally managed to upload it into the gallery. View it here.

Also a big thank you to all of you who have added pictures to the gallery: Ruth added more pics to Academy Awards, Marcy for sending me pictures of Scarlett at a David Bowie concert and Mariana for the many unpublished pictures: by Jason Bell, by Ophelia Wynne, by Danielle Levitt and Various. And some new pictures from Ali here. By the way I should now have added every credit in the gallery.

And thank you Roberta from Thora Birch Net for making my site 'Site of the Month'. You can see her award here. Her site is now also part of my affiliates.

Steven Flores sent me two interesting articles:
» Scarlett Letters (Vogue, March)
» Girl with the Golden Touch (Moviemaker, Winter)

And I have fixed my email problem. But if you've written an email since Monday you'll have to write again, sorry.

Check out new pictures from Hello! and Cine Live (France) in the gallery. Also in the gallery ar Jmanin's screen caps of Scarlett at the Late late Show with Craig Kilborn, thanks!!!

And i found this work-related rumour at MTV:
Kravitz will film a video for the first single, "Where We Runnin'?," shortly. Sources familiar with the production of the video said the rock star's first casting choice for the video was actress Natalie Portman. She declined because of a work conflict, so Kravitz has set his eyes on Scarlett Johansson.

Julio has installed a site search and a poll. Thanks a lot!

I have problems receiving emails. I let you know as soon as I receive them again. Until then, your emails won't be read. Sorry
Scarlett is on the cover of French Elle dated March 8. I haven't scanned the cover but the pictures inside, and one of them is the same picture as on the cover - just without the text. Go to the gallery and type in Elle in the search form.

Scarlett is also in the British tabloids magazine Hello! - but my computer had some problems yesterday, so I haven't yet added those pics.

New affiliate: Beautiful Angelina.

On Monday, the Craig Kilborn show from last December will be re-aired. As always, screen caps or a small media file for the site would be very welcome.

Added some pictures from New York Magazine. View

Jmanin has added great screen caps from the Oscar show.

Added pictures of Scarlett at the 76th Academy Awards. Scarlett presented the Award for Best Make-Up & Hair to the people from 'The Lord of the Rings - Return of the King'

I got myself a new scanner and started to scan all those pictures I have at home. Among them the pictures from Movieline, February, and other magazine scans from the year 2004. Read the Movieline article here: ScarlettWoman.

The pictures you find here are o n l y on display - you are n o t allowed to take them off the site!! But they are nice to look at, aren't they?

Added the magazine pictures for the year 1998. Some of the pictures have been re-scanned by me and are now available in larger versions than previously.

Fanlistings for Scarlett's most recent films: The Perfect Score Fanlisting and Girl with a Pearl Earring Fanlisting. And Nadine has opened a Forum: An Unofficial Scarlett Johansson Forum

Lately, I got some emails concerning the birth date of Scarlett: of course it wasn't the 20th Anniversary of the assassination of JFK but the 21st. I'm not good at remembering year dates - and when it comes to American history I'm hopeless. The 20th anniversary thing, I picked up in an article about Scarlett. Anyway, I've updated the biography - also the ending is now up-to-date.
